Click Click (Copy, Paste) and the Data is out there... The risks in PowerBI import mode (and the Solution)
PowerBI file usually contain data and metadata such as relationships, measures, calculated columns etc… When PowerBI file contain the data, it is super easy to use and it called import mode.
It bring the data to
PowerBI from various of data sources to a tabular model that reside in the file and that when PowerBI can work fast and be interactive and easy to work with.
The benefits are very clear, but what are the risks?
Bring all the data to one file sound familiar.
It is similar, in a way to how MS Access works.
MS Access contain all the data and code in one big file.
PowerBI can reside in the cloud (PowerBI
Services) but to change anything you need the file.
Problems starting with someone copy-paste or downloaded that file.
That is super easy to do. It’s just a file...
From that moment the company lose
track of the data, it can go to finance department, marketing department, etc,
and can find it way out of the organisation in various of simple ways.
It became impossible to secure.
But again, the benefits of using PowerBI are very clear, so what to do?
